ARTAS: the Frequently Asked Questions

How does the ARTAS robotic procedure work?

ARTAS does what surgeons have done for years, but better. The robotic technology restores hair with minimal invasiveness, virtually no down time or no scars. Unlike the traditional strip surgery, there is no linear scar in the back of the head, and no awkward-looking hair as a result. And while surgeons who perform follicular unit extraction by hand have to rely on their expertise, the robotic arm relies on advanced technology and digital imaging to achieve a much higher rate of accuracy. It continuously recalculates the direction and position of the follicular units to ensure the optimal harvesting results, and designs the most natural-looking hair growth pattern. The robotic procedure is also much more precise than a surgery performed by a doctor, and while the surgeon gets tired, the machine does not.

What is the cost of the ARTAS hair transplant?

Cost depends on your particular situation and the amount of hair loss you are experiencing. During your free consultation, Dr. Max will estimate the number of grafts you may need, which affects the cost.

Will I experience pain during the ARTAS hair procedure?

No. First, a local anesthetic is applied, which may cause slight discomfort. Once the scalp is numbed, the procedure itself is entirely pain-free.

How long is the recovery period?

It is much shorter than with all other existing hair restoration surgeries: usually anywhere from 1-3 days. Because there are no surgical cuts or stitches involved, the most people can expect is some mild swelling and discomfort. Most are able to resume their regular activities within 48 hours.

What is the difference between ARTAS and hair plugs?

The old-fashioned “hair plugs” are what’s known as a strip surgery, when a strip of hair is removed from the back of the head and transplanted onto areas that are experiencing baldness. As a result, these areas can appear unnatural. ARTAS is the robotic option for the follicular unit transplant (FUT) surgery – individual follicles are transplanted. This allows us to preserve natural hair groupings and results in natural-looking hair.

Will anyone know I’ve had a hair transplant?

Absolutely not. Today’s technology allows for the transplantation of individual follicular units. We also ensure that the direction of follicular hair growth in the transplanted area is the natural direction of your hair. What’s more, there are virtually no scars. Unlike older surgeries that left clients with linear scars in the back of the head, ARTAS may leave minimal, barely visible scars in the donor area. You can wear your hair any way you want: any length, any style.

When will I see results? Are the results of an ARTAS procedure permanent?

As with all hair transplant procedures, it takes time to see results. You will begin to see results about three months after the procedure; in six months, you will see a considerable improvement, and final results will be visible after a year. The results are absolutely permanent. The technology involves your own hair, transplanted from the back of your head. This hair is generally not affected by male or female pattern baldness, and thus lasts a lifetime.

Do I have to cut my hair before the ARTAS robotic procedure?

Yes, it is recommended that you trim your hair short in the donor area for the ARTAS machine to successfully analyze, track and harvest the follicular units.

How long does the ARTAS hair transplant procedure take?

It depends on the amount of hair restoration that is required in your particular case. Dr. Max will give you an estimate during your free consultation. Generally, the procedure takes 4-8 hours. As you sit back and relax, Dr. Max will oversee the process, and staff are available to make you as comfortable as possible.
